Shelf Pottery Ltd., Halifax - Large Brutalist Pottery Table Lamp
Circa 1970s  Original label  Double-bulb design  PAT tested

A substantial sculptural lamp by Shelf Pottery Ltd., Halifax, a Yorkshire studio known for its expressive 1960s-70s stoneware. Based in the village of Shelf, just outside Halifax, the pottery produced a wide range of studio pieces, vases, wall pockets, money boxes and lighting, often characterised by earthy glazes, pierced decoration and a distinctly Brutalist sensibility. Although records are limited, pieces from the workshop are increasingly collected for their characterful hand-built forms and the studio’s connection to the wider British pottery movement of the period.

This example is one of their most striking lamp designs. The base is finished in a brown–khaki glaze with a textured slip band and a pierced, circular motif that wraps around the body. It has real presence: architectural, tactile and unmistakably handmade.

It features the rare double-bulb construction typical of some Shelf Pottery lamps, a standard bulb at the top, and a second bulb inside the base. When lit, the lower bulb shines through the pierced openings, creating a warm, patterned glow that feels almost lantern-like.

The tall neck in contrasting glaze gives the piece a beautifully balanced silhouette. A natural linen shade (shown in photographs) complements the ceramics perfectly.

Recently rewired with a new brown twisted fabric cord and a taupe inline switch, the lamp retains its original maker’s label and has been PAT tested, ready for everyday use.
