Børge Mogensen for FDB Møbler ‘China’ Shelving Unit

Teak and Oak

Dimensions: 122 × 93 × 26 cm

Condition: Very good, with minor knocks commensurate with age.

Designed by Børge Mogensen as part of his celebrated ‘China’ series for FDB Møbler, these shelves reflect his lifelong interest in functional, adaptable storage. The series, first introduced in the late 1950s, was inspired by traditional Chinese cabinetmaking, specifically the calm, rectilinear forms and clear construction logic found in historic Chinese furniture. Mogensen translated these influences into a modular system for modern Scandinavian homes, using exposed shelving, practical proportions and honest joinery.

This example combines teak shelving with an oak base, a material pairing typical of Mogensen’s work for FDB, balancing warmth with structure. The open format makes it ideal for books, ceramics or glass, while the raised oak frame gives the piece an architectural lightness. Adjustable shelves offer flexibility, allowing the unit to function as a display cabinet, room divider or storage piece.

Overall, the cabinet remains in very good vintage condition, showing only light marks consistent with its age.

About Børge Mogensen (1914–1972)

Børge Mogensen was a key figure of Danish Modern and one of the most influential designers working in post-war Scandinavia. Trained as a cabinetmaker before studying at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts and later the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Mogensen developed a design language grounded in craftsmanship, clarity and everyday function.

His long collaboration with FDB Møbler helped shape the idea of democratic Danish design-well-made, accessible furniture intended for modern family living. Mogensen drew inspiration from historical references including Shaker, English and Spanish furniture, but always distilled these influences into calm, timeless forms.

Noted for pieces such as the Spanish Chair, Hunting Chair and his modular storage systems, Mogensen’s work is prized today for its durability, refined proportions and quiet architectural presence. His designs remain in production and are highly collected, reflecting their continuing relevance more than half a century on.
