Robert Goodden for Chance Brothers ‘Orlak’ Art Deco Glass Ashtray/Decorative Bowl, 1935

An Art Deco ‘Orlak’ ashtray designed by Robert Goodden for Chance Brothers in around 1935.

Made from pale blue opal pressed glass, the ashtray has a deep circular bowl with broad projecting rests on either side. The stepped, grooved detailing and symmetrical shape are characteristic of the geometric forms used in British Art Deco design during the 1930s.

Robert Goodden was a British designer and silversmith who produced several pressed-glass designs for Chance Brothers during the decade. Chance Brothers was founded in Smethwick in 1822 and became one of Britain’s most important manufacturers of industrial, architectural and domestic glass. The company was particularly known for its technical glass production, including lighthouse lenses, before expanding its domestic ranges during the 20th century. 

Although originally made as an ashtray, its  proportions allow it to be used as a decorative bowl or vide-poche.
