Sideboard by John Herbert for Younger
United Kingdom, 1960s
Designed by John Herbert for Scottish manufacturer Younger Ltd, this sideboard is a strong example of British mid-century furniture at its most refined. Herbert served as Younger’s head designer during the 1950s and 60s, helping establish the company as one of the leading producers of modern furniture in post-war Britain. His work balanced Scandinavian influence with a distinctly British restraint, prioritising proportion, craftsmanship and usability.
This piece features an arrangement of twin cupboards flanking a central bank of four drawers, offering generous storage while maintaining a clean horizontal profile. The gently curved front edges, integrated circular handles and finely tapered legs soften the overall form, giving the cabinet an elegant architectural presence.
Executed in richly grained teak, the surface displays warm tonal variation typical of Younger’s production during this period. The raised stance and slim leg profile allow the piece to sit lightly within a room despite its scale, making it equally suited to dining or living spaces.
Condition
Good vintage condition with light age-related wear consistent with use. Structurally sound.
