1950s Walnut Chest Of Drawers by Vanson (UK)
1950s Walnut Chest Of Drawers by Vanson (UK)
Vanson Walnut Chest of Drawers, England, 1950s
Produced by Vanson in England during the 1950s, this chest of drawers is a well proportioned example of postwar British modern furniture. Made in walnut, the drawers display a beautifully figured grain across the fronts.
The chest is fitted with six drawers and stands on gently tapering legs. The drawers are finished with lovely turned wooden pulls set into subtle brass backplates, a small but thoughtful detail that reflects the care with which these pieces were made. The drawers run smoothly and the overall construction feels solid and well considered.
This example has been owned by the same person since new and has clearly been well looked after. The condition is excellent for its age, with the walnut retaining a rich, even tone and the structure remaining strong and stable.
Vanson was the trading name of W.G. Evans & Sons, a British manufacturer active in the mid-20th century. Much of the company’s work was designed by Peter Hayward, whose designs helped position Vanson at the more refined end of British furniture production. Influenced by Scandinavian modernism, their furniture combined clean proportions with careful craftsmanship and was often retailed through Heal’s, which championed contemporary British design during the period.
A practical and well-made piece that sits comfortably within both modern and midcentury interiors.
