  • 3 seater sofa by R W Toothill (1960s) UK

    3 seater sofa by R W Toothill (1960s) UK

    £2,000.00

A 3 seater sofa by British Midcentury furniture manufacturer R W Toothill.  This frame is sturdy and made from solid Aformosia.  It has been stripped and oiled to reveal its rich patina, it has some small marks to the frame consistent with age.  The fire retardant cushions are new as are the pure wool covers.

This is available to view in store.

    Dimensions:

    Height: 71cm
    Width: 168.5cm
    Depth: 90cm
    Seat height: 45cm

R W Toothill was founded by Reg Toothill in Newton Aycliffe after the 2nd World War. His original business was making loose covers for existing sofas.
Wartime and Post War restrictions greatly limited production of new fumiture and even in the early 1950's it was extremely difficult for new manufacturers to make furniture particularly as wood was severely rationed and only available to larger makers. If you couldn't buy a new sofa whether it was because there was so little available or down to cost, the onty altenative was to have an existing one re-done and loose covers were a lot cheaper than full re-upholstery.
Toothill mainly used afromosia in the 1960's for their frames and detailing. It's sometimes called African teak but it's not from the teak family and is darker and harder to work with. It was used by Guy Rogers of Liverpool for their sofas and chairs in the early 1960's but they later moved on to using teak whereas Toothill continued to work with afromosia which has the most stunning grain running through it.

Dutch designer Theo Ruth was born in 1915 in Maastricht. He trained as a furniture designer and interior designer at the Middelbare Kunstnijverheidsschool in Maastricht (which later became the Maastricht Academy of Arts). In 1936, he joined Artifort in Maastricht, where he specialised in designing living room furniture. Just three years later, in 1939, he became head of design and development, a position he maintained until his death in 1971.

Ruth was Artifort’s first permanent designer, and he had a major impact on its design legacy. His most famous pieces include the 1952 Congo Chair and the 1953 Penguin Chair, both of which were constructed from two interlocking pieces that fit together without locks or screws (the latter’s original version featured a black back and a white cushion to mimic its namesake). Notably, designers Pierre Paulin and Geoffrey Harcourt also collaborated with Artifort’s design department during Ruth’s tenure.
