The Chairmakers  Chair is one of the most recognisable designs produced by Ercol. It was introduced in 1943 when Lucian Ercolani was commissioned by the British Board of Trade to develop a Windsor chair that could be produced efficiently during wartime, using relatively small amounts of timber while still maintaining strength and comfort.

Ercolani’s solution refined the traditional Windsor form into something lighter and more modern. The chair features the characteristic high spindle back, with eight slender, steam bent spindles set into a shaped top rail and a solid sculpted seat.

Produced in solid ash, the design demonstrates Ercol’s expertise in steam bending and traditional chairmaking techniques. First introduced during the wartime utility furniture programme, the Chairmakers Chair has remained in production ever since and is now considered one of the defining pieces of British mid-century furniture design.

This example is finished in a warm ash tone and includes new seat and back cushions upholstered in our workshop in pure wool Camira fabric.
