About A Fold of Chairs

A Fold of Chairs is a specialist upholstery studio and midcentury furniture store based in St Albans, Hertfordshire.

Founded by upholsterer Caroline Hoggarth, the business combines traditional upholstery skills with a carefully curated collection of twentieth century furniture, lighting, art and objects. Working from a workshop and showroom in the heart of St Albans, Caroline and her team restore, source and sell pieces from some of the most influential designers of the post war period.

Originally trained in marketing, Caroline retrained as an upholsterer before launching A Fold of Chairs. Today, the business is known for its expertise in restoring Scandinavian and British mid-century furniture, with much of the work carried out in full view of customers from the workshop in the shop.

Sustainability sits at the heart of the business. Through restoration, repair and reupholstery, A Fold of Chairs extends the life of existing furniture, championing craftsmanship and thoughtful consumption over disposable interiors.

Alongside the shop, Caroline regularly works with private clients, interior designers and creative businesses to source and restore furniture for homes, offices, film productions and commercial spaces.
