Tremaen Cornish Pottery Sculptural Bowjey Lamp by Peter Ellery (1970s) Cornwall
Tremaen Cornish Pottery Sculptural Bowjey Lamp by Peter Ellery (1970s) Cornwall
Large-scale ceramic table lamp from the Tremaen pottery studio
A striking, sculptural studio pottery lamp designed by Peter Ellery and produced by Tremaen Pottery in the 1970s. The form, titled Bowjey, features deeply textured relief work in an organic palette of warm browns and off-white glaze. Inspired by the Cornish landscape and seascape, the piece is architectural.
This particular example is one of Tremaen’s most celebrated lamp forms, distinguished by its scale and craftsmanship. It remains unglazed at the base and has been fully PAT tested.
About Tremaen Pottery
Tremaen Pottery was founded in 1965 by Peter Ellery in Marazion, Cornwall. Originally trained as a sculptor at Falmouth School of Art, Ellery brought an artistic, almost brutalist sensibility to his ceramics. Unlike traditional Cornish potteries focused on tableware, Tremaen specialised in sculptural forms, lamps, wall plaques, and abstract vessels - often drawing on local myths, natural textures, and coastal motifs.
By the 1970s, Tremaen’s distinct look had gained national attention, with stockists including Heal’s and Liberty. Production remained small-batch and hand-finished, with each lamp having subtle variations in glazing and relief patterning.
Tremaen closed in the early 1980s, making original works from this period increasingly sought after by collectors of British studio ceramics.
