David Leach was born in Tokyo in 1911, trained by Shoji Hamad, not his father, the prolific potter Bernard Leech. He studied at North Staffs Technical College and in 1930 joined his family pottery studio, Leech Pottery in St Ives.
In 1953 he headed the ceramics department of Loughborough College. He started the Aylesford Pottery in 1954, handing it over a year later to Colin Pearson.
After the handover of Aylesford Pottery he moved to Bovey Tracey in Devon and set up Lowerdown Pottery
He was awarded the O.B.E in 1987, and is important for his development of porcelain suitable for studio pottery and his services to education. David died in February, 2005.

Michael Cardew (1901-1983) was a pupil of prolific potter Bernard Leach. He went on to run Winchcombe pottery in Gloucestershire where he produced mainly domestic ware. During the 1930s he moved to Wenford Bridge Pottery in Cornwall where he began to experiment with new ceramic shapes and decorations. A retrospective exhibition was mounted at the crafts council in 1976 and he was awarded the OBE for contribution to British ceramics the same year. He has published many significant books on the art of pottery.
