Introduced in 1966, the series reflected a growing shift towards softer modernism, combining Scandinavian influence with the practicality required for everyday family homes.

These dining chairs demonstrate Wilkins’ careful attention to proportion and structure. Slim tapered teak legs are united by distinctive X-stretchers, providing both visual rhythm and strength, while the gently curved backrests offer comfort without unnecessary bulk. The result is a chair that feels light in appearance yet exceptionally stable.

Importantly, this set retains its original rich brown leather upholstery, which remains in excellent condition. Given both the quality and preservation of the leather, we have made the decision not to reupholster - something we rarely choose to do. The seats have developed a natural softness and patina that would be difficult to replicate, preserving the authenticity of the chairs as intended by the manufacturer.

G-Plan was one of the most influential furniture manufacturers in post-war Britain, known for bringing modern, well-designed furniture into ordinary homes.

The company was founded in 1953 by Donald Gomme, the grandson of Ebenezer Gomme who had established the earlier firm E. Gomme Ltd in High Wycombe in 1898. Donald Gomme recognised that Britain’s rapidly expanding post-war housing market needed practical, stylish furniture that could be bought gradually rather than as expensive matching suites.

G Plan became famous for its coordinated ranges, allowing customers to purchase individual pieces over time while maintaining a consistent look. Early collections such as the Brandon range helped popularise modern teak furniture in Britain during the 1950s and 1960s. The company also worked with notable designers including Victor Bramwell Wilkins, whose elegant Fresco range became one of G Plan’s most recognisable and widely produced mid-century collections.

Condition
Excellent vintage condition.
