Born in Texas, she originally trained as a painter and sculptor before travelling to Japan, where she met the celebrated potter Shoji Hamada. Through Hamada she became acquainted with Bernard Leach and later married him in 1956.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eAlthough often associated with the Leach family, Janet developed a distinctive style of her own. Her work drew heavily on Japanese ceramics, particularly the expressive forms and bold glazing traditions she encountered during her time in Mashiko. Following Bernard Leach’s death in 1979, she became Director of Leach Pottery in St Ives, helping to preserve and promote its legacy while continuing her own practice.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eUnlike the more restrained pottery often associated with the Leach tradition, Janet’s work is frequently characterised by energetic forms, dramatic glazing and a willingness to embrace chance effects created during firing.
